The spring season is an excellent opportunity to review your routine, evaluate your habits, and make some adjustments that will help you achieve your weight loss goals. Here are a few changes you can begin to make while spring cleaning your weight loss plan:
Winter may have found you eating lots of carbohydrates that contribute to weight gain, from Christmas cookies to Valentine’s sweets. If this unhelpful diet sounds like you, spring is the time to reevaluate and make some changes. Take advantage of local produce and try eating fresh when you can - you’ll also be supporting small businesses while doing so. Warmer weather is also a great excuse to eat lighter: try veggies such as asparagus and snap peas, and fruits such as strawberries and raspberries. Your meals themselves can also feature light dishes such as salads, soups and grilled fish.
Have you reflected on your home exercise opportunities during the cold winter months? Has your usual routine fallen by the wayside? If a lack of home exercise equipment has been hindering your weight loss progress, consider looking into some in-home exercises you can do, no equipment necessary. As the weather improves, be sure to take advantage and enjoy outdoor exercises such as hiking and jogging. You can even stay active while literally spring cleaning - and don’t forget to clean out your pantry!
Studies suggest that stressful conditions can hinder weight loss. We live in a stressful world, and sometimes the factors which contribute to stress are out of our control. However, there are a few things you can do to help manage your stress and maintain your weight loss progress. Try practicing mindfulness and breathing exercises when you can. You can even perform double-duty and practice mindfulness while exercising during certain types of yoga. As daylight savings has come and gone, spring is also a great time to evaluate your sleep schedule, which can have a direct impact on both your stress levels and your weight.
Evidence shows that a social group that supports and shares your weight loss goals can help you achieve those goals more effectively. Do you have a support system in place? Have you been communicating with them regularly, or have you become a winter shut-in? Even while we practice social distancing nationwide, there are plenty of ways to connect with your weight loss crew. Check in online with your group, practice exercises in the home over video, and set goals to achieve individually that you can discuss and celebrate when you reconvene.
