Boosting Your Metabolism in Cold Weather

Spring is supposed to be here soon, but brr! Though it marks the beginning of a warmer season, March is still one of the coldest months of the year. And when it’s cold outside, many of us tend to hunker down indoors and get comfortable. Of course, that also means a less active lifestyle and a slower metabolism.

But that doesn't mean you can't do anything about it! At the Right Weight Center, we believe losing weight is possible regardless of the weather, time of year, or season. That's why we've put together these tips to help you boost your metabolism in cold weather:

Stay Hydrated

One of the best healthy habits you can build is drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Not only does it keep your body hydrated and healthy, but staying properly hydrated also helps to increase your metabolism. In fact, there are a lot of ways drinking water can help you lose weight.

First, replacing your typical can of soda, cup of juice, or mug of coffee with a cold glass of water can help you consume fewer calories. Second, drinking water can help you eat less, further reducing your calorie intake by reducing your food intake. Many times, when we think we're hungry, we're actually just thirsty, and filling up on water can help you feel full and avoid unnecessary snacking.

Third, staying hydrated is a necessary part of losing weight. Without water, your body can properly metabolize or burn stored fats and carbs. So, if you want to boost your metabolism and speed up your weight loss journey, make sure you're drinking at least eight glasses of water a day!

Sleep Well

Getting enough high-quality sleep has several health benefits, as well. Not only does it help you feel more energized and productive, but it also helps with your metabolism. Though your metabolism actually slows down about 15% while you sleep, that rest benefits your body in ways that ultimately give your metabolism a boost.

Additionally, lack of sleep can contribute to cravings for sugary and fatty foods, as well as increased hunger. It can also cause your body to produce stress hormones that slow down your metabolism and cause weight gain. This means sleep should be a key component of your weight loss or weight management strategy!

Exercise Regularly

All of the best weight loss programs will recommend regular exercise. And though it might be hard to stay motivated when it's cold outside, you can still find ways to get your sweat on and keep your metabolism running.

There are plenty of ways to get active from inside the warmth of your home. The internet is full of video workouts you can follow, no matter what your fitness level or routine. You can also use any equipment you have to create a personalized home workout plan. Even something as simple as going up and down the stairs or using milk jugs as weights can help you stay active and keep your metabolism running.

Eat a Healthy Diet

If you're like most of our patients, you've tried a number of weight loss programs and diet programs in the past, to no avail. Programs like Weight Watchers and diets like the Mediterranean diet, DASH diet, and the Mayo Clinic diet may work in the short term, but many find themselves yo-yo-ing and gaining weight in the long term.

That said, healthy eating is an important aspect of any successful weight loss program, but trying to do it alone can be a struggle, too. Nutrition can be confusing and overwhelming, which is why many people give up on healthy eating altogether. What's the difference between unhealthy fats and healthy fats? What healthy carbs should I be eating? How much protein do I need?

As part of our Right Weight Program, our experts will help you develop an effective meal plan that works for you and helps to boost your metabolism. In addition, our custom approach utilizes clinically-proven natural products that suppress fat and carbohydrate absorption, like appetite suppressants, fat burners, and energy boosters.

Speaking of fat burners and energy boosters…
